Experimental characterization of in-plane permeability of gas diffusion layers

چکیده
Recent studies indicate that PEM fuel cell performance may be strongly influenced by in-plane permeability of the gas diffusion layer (GDL). The urrent study employs a radial flow technique for obtaining in-plane permeability of GDLs, using either gas or liquid as the impregnating fluid. A odel has been developed and experimentally verified to account for compressibility effects when permeability measurements are conducted using gas. Permeability experiments are performed on samples of woven, non-woven, and carbon fiber-based GDL at various levels of compression sing air as the impregnating fluid. Woven and non-woven samples are measured to have significantly higher in-plane permeability compared to arbon fiber paper at similar solid volume fractions. 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Stochastic reconstruction of carbon fiber paper gas diffusion layers of PEFCs: A comparative study
A 3D microstructure of the non-woven gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) is reconstructed using a stochastic method. For a commercial GDL, due to the planar orientation of the fibers in the GDL, 2D SEM image of the GDL surface is used to estimate the orientation of the carbon fibers in the domain. Two more microstructures with different fiber orientations are g...

Effects of mechanical compression and PTFE content on the through-plane gas permeability of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of PEM fuel cells are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A new test bed is designed and built which allows pressure drop and air flow rate measurement for various GDL samples. The measured values are used to calculate the through-plane permeability. Various GD...
متن کاملIn-plane gas permeability of proton exchange membrane fuel cell gas diffusion layers
A new analytical approach is proposed for evaluating the in-plane permeability of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In this approach, the microstructure of carbon papers is modeled as a combination of equally-sized, equally-spaced fibers parallel and perpendicular to the flow direction. The permeability of the carbon paper is then estimated by a blend of the pe...

Two nondestructive electromagnetic/magnetic techniques including hysteresis loop and eddy current methodologies have been used to characterize microstructural changes of AISI D2 cold work tool steel as a result of quench and tempering treatments. To measure the fraction retained austenite in quenched microstructure, six specimens were austenitized in the range of 1000-1130 °C. Samples austenit...
